As announced at the JEE Alliance meeting on 20 May 2017 in Geneva, Australia has accepted an invitation to co-chair the JEE Alliance with Finland. Australia is represented by Australia’s Ambassador for Regional Health Security, Mr Blair Exell.
Mr Exell is a senior career officer with the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and is currently the First Assistant Secretary, Development Policy Division. He has served overseas with the Australian Government in senior roles in Indonesia, Solomon Islands and Cambodia.
Australia is a leader on health security in the Indo-Pacific region. The Indo-Pacific faces a number of health threats, including from existing and emerging infectious diseases, which can have serious social and economic impacts.
Through the Australian Government’s Regional Health Security Initiative, Australia will fund health security and health systems strengthening activities to enable the Indo-Pacific region to prevent, detect and respond to health threats, including dangerous disease outbreaks and drug resistance.
As co-chair of the JEE Alliance, Australia is eager to focus the work of the Alliance on encouraging the development of costed national action plans, financing and building country capacity on health security, and to advocate for the needs of the Indo-Pacific.
Australia welcomes a close working relationship with Finland in advancing health security as a global priority.
